Babymoon: Charleston, South Carolina

We had our babymoon! It gave us an opportunity to vacation before our baby boy gets here. For our babymoon, we went to Charleston, SC. We always have a good time in Charleston; it has a lot of charm. We didn’t really plan the activities for this trip like we normally do. I have to admit, I’m a planner so it was hard to just go with the flow but it was great seeing where our vacation took us. We ended up eating at restaurants we would’ve never gone to and exploring the beach like we never would’ve if we had planned every detail. Isn’t it funny how we try to have so much control over certain things in life when giving up control is really what’s best? There’s nothing wrong with being a planner. When God made me, He knew exactly what He was doing. Planning allows me to be efficient, productive, and effect. It’s a great quality to have; however, sometimes when we give up control we’ll open the door for new experiences to happen to us. Here are a few photos from our babymoon:

My bathing suit is from Target. It was so comfortable!

This off the shoulder dress is from I love how this color pops.

What No One Tells You About Being a Girlboss

As you may know, I’ve launched my own clothing boutique and I couldn’t be more proud. It’s my baby. I’ve dreamed of having my own business for years but I never thought it would actually happen for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love being an entrepreneur. I love being the CEO. I love doing something that I’m passionate about. However, it’s hard work! Is it just me or did anyone else look at the images of entrepreneurs on social media and think “wow, that looks easy”? I know now that being an entrepreneur means:

1. Fulfilling orders on a Friday night.

2. Answering emails at midnight.

3. Conducting industry and customer research in between meals.

4. Having to motivate myself when I feel so uninspired.

5. Not playing the comparison game with another Girl Boss’s business.

6. Having to turn down social events in order to fully focus on my business.

7. Setting aside hours to plan and create content.

8. Feeling isolated sometimes being that I’m the only employee.

I say all of this, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s an unexplainable feeling of having something that’s yours. There’s an unexplainable feeling to watch your business grow. So, to anyone who’s on the fence about starting your own business: what are you waiting for?

If you have any advice on how you deal with being an entrepreneur, I’d love to hear it! Feel free to leave your comment below. You can shop Queen Styles Boutique and build your fall wardrobe.

You Are Loved

Get this down in your spirit: you are loved. It doesn’t matter what you mistakes you’ve made, God has a never ending love for you. God loves you right where you are. He loves the real you and there is nothing you can do about it! As children of the Most High, we have direct access to a God who pursues us with His love even when we make mistakes. As you go about your week, rest in the fact that His faithful love is pursuing you.

Forgotten Dreams

I was speaking with someone the other day about the job market. We were talking about a certain position and I asked my friend if it was a position they were passionate about and she replied “no but I’m not following my passion anymore.” That really made me think “when did we get so cynical?” Before I judged her statement I realized I’ve fallen into the same mindset. I had come to terms with the fact that my dream, in terms of my career, probably isn’t realistic. The way our society is right now can make you think the “American dream” is just that…a dream.

I had to stop and ask myself “when was the last time you reached for your dreams?” Which lead me to another question “when was the last time you got uncomfortable?” I realized I gave up on my dream simply because it made me uncomfortable. That woke me up! Well I’m so glad I serve a God who wants to give me the secret petitions of my heart. Secret meaning even the desires and petitions that I’ve hidden from myself. Well I’ve made up in my mind that it’s time to get uncomfortable. I’m making some changes and pushes myself out of my comfort zone. I challenge you to do the same. Whatever your forgotten dream is, I challenge you to strive for it again.

Here’s to 2017!

I can’t believe tomorrow is the start of a brand new year already. I feel like this year just flew by so quickly! If you had to pick a word to describe 2016 what would it be? Mine would be: refining. This year I learned so much about myself and other people. I can feel how these lessons are refining me and turning me into the woman God created me to be. So I’m pumped about the new year ahead.  No matter what your descriptive word is, I believe that what lies ahead of me and you is something great. I’m not sure how your year was. Maybe it was great or maybe it was a challenging year for you. Whatever the case, know that you have the great opportunity to have a new outlook on the next 365 days.

If you’re tired or feeling a bit pessimistic about the new year, I encourage you to get your fire back. Get excited about the great things that are on the horizon for 2017! I’m excited for you!

Next year I’ll be blogging more often and doing some giveaways! I’m wishing you all a safe and positive new year! If you want to see how I’m celebrating tonight, feel free to follow me on my socials:

Listen to Your Heart

As this year is winding down, it’s time for some reflection. Specially, about blogging. My blog isn’t where I want it to be but it’s exactly where it’s supposed to be (how’s that for a riddle?). What I mean by that is, that I have certain goals for my blog. I’m sure I’ll reach those goals but when it’s my appointed time to reach them. My blog is exactly where it’s supposed to be right now.

I’ll admit, it can be tempting to want to follow other blogs and do what other blogger are doing. But I know I have to follow my own path and listen to my heart. A couple of years ago I went to a fashion networking event. I was new to blogging and very eager to learn and network. While we were eating, I’m expecting to learn from others and that’s the opposite of what happened. For about two hours, the women gossiped. For. Two. Hours.  I was so disappointed. I learned a valuable lesson that day: follow your own path. It’s good to learn from others but people should never stunt your growth or bring toxic energy. Maybe you can relate. In the sense you want to be at a certain level or reach a goal. It’ll happen. As long as you continue to work for it. The important thing to remember is to be yourself. Just listen to your heart and everything else will follow.

How to: Rock a LBD

I hope your week is off to an awesome start. Over the weekend I went to a friend’s Engamenet Party. I rarely wear black. When I was younger, I thought I had to overcompensate with my personality and what I wore just to stand out. I’ll be honest, I thought there was nothing special about my personality. So I was loud when I should’ve been quiet. I showed aggressiveness when I should’ve shown self-control. I tried to dress a certain way to signify that I was special. Rather than just letting my personality do the work for me. As I’ve gotten older I know without a shadow of a doubt that there’s tons of special things about me. Yes, I’m an introvert by nature but I’m not weak, timid or quiet. Now I know that there’s great strength in having self-control. I know when I need to speak up and when I need to let God vindicate me.

I don’t feel the need to overcompensate with my personality anymore. I know that wearing black doesn’t make me blend in at all. I don’t need to dress a certain way just to show people I’m special. So when I was drawn to this LBD, I realized how much I have changed. So whoever you are, know that you don’t have to act a certain way. You don’t have to dress or look a certain way; just be yourself.

You’re Stronger Than You Think

A year ago my small intestines were suffocating my colon. The type of obstruction I had is common in infants and the elderly (as you have noticed, I am neither). I’ve had surgery before but this time was different. There was no planning or preparation. I had to lean on God like I’ve never done before. There were times in the hospital when I just felt so calm. It was a peace that couldn’t be explained in a situation like this and I know it was nobody but Him! I’m blessed by His love and healing power. He blessed me with an awesome support system that I couldn’t have even imagined. Some people took the time to see me while I basically slept lol. But your support meant everything to me. They usually give a recovery time of a year to recover. So today we conquered Crowders Mountain to celebrate.

I don’t know what you’re going through but I just wanted to remind you that you’re stronger than you think. So many times we get caught up in the situation that we forget just how strong we already are. For me, I know my strength comes from God. Focus on your strength and know that your future is so bright!

Blogging Tips

I hope you are having a great week! I received a message on Instagram a couple of days ago asking me if I had any tips on starting a blog. I do have a few tips below:

1. Figure out why you are blogging.

One the surface, this may seem very simple but it was complex for me. I knew I wanted to talk about certain topics aside from fashion (scoliosis, bullying, eating disorders, and how to stay motivated just to name a few) but that still didn’t narrow it down. I had to figure out if I wanted to do more advertising content vs. creating my own. If I wanted to advertise, how often did I want to do it? What types of advertisements did I want to write about? You see where I’m going with this. Once you figure out why you are blogging, you can then start to think about your brand.

2. Create and maintain your brand.

It could be because I’m a marketing major but my next tip is figuring out who you are as a blogger or what your brand is. When viewers look at your blog, who or what do you want them to see? Your brand as a blogger should be the essence of who you are. Start to think about the types of photos you will feature. Do you want to have a filter on all of your photos? Do you prefer colorful photos vs. black and white? All of these factors contribute to your brand.

3. Stay true to your brand.

When I started blogging, I ALWAYS compared myself to other bloggers. While comparison can be good, it can also be the death of contentment. Here’s what I mean: I would try to change the tone of my writing and brand of my blog to match another blogger. I saw how many likes they received and wanted just as many. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to acheive, don’t change your brand to match another blogger. You have an advantage. There is only one you! Yes, there are other fashion bloggers but there’s not another you out there. You have a unique voice and perspective so let the world see it!

4. Try to post consistently.

Posting consistently gives your readers something to look forward to. Regardless if you post three times a week or once a week. It also makes viewers excited to follow you and read your content. I have a reminder on my phone that helps me stay on track. When you post, make sure you proofread!

5. Enjoy it!

As a blogger, I do look at statistics to see how my posts have preformed and sometimes tweak my posts based off of these statistics but honestly I just like to blog. Chances are, you started blogging because you have something to say. Don’t stress on the numbers. It takes a while to get a large following. Focus on your message and have fun! Enjoy interacting with your viewers.

June 2016 Grad

Wow. It still feels surreal that I graduated. I worked so hard and even when I got sick, I decided not to withdraw from classes. Walking across the stage on Friday was truly rewarding! I can’t say what happens next for me. I’m not sure about you, but moments of transition aren’t always easy for me. Maybe it’s due to my knee-jerk reaction to control every situation (I’ve been that way since I was little). I started stressing about my next move when I realized that worrying about the future takes away from the current moment. I had a lot of friends and family who came to celebrate with me this weekend and focusing on the negative only diminished this positive moment.

So I say to you, whether you are a graduate or just someone thinking about your future, RELAX. Enjoy right now. The future will always take care of itself. Things have a way of falling into place when we stop trying to arrange the future to match our perfect plan. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have a plan. What I’m saying is to be open and flexible to make any changes to your perfect plans for your future.
