How to: Wear Metallics Pieces During the Day

Some people say that metallics are too flashy to be worn during the day. I’ve always disagreed with that. Fashion isn’t supposed to be restricting with a lot of rules, it’s supposed to be fun. If you feel like wearing metallics during the day, do it! Balance is key. Try pairing your metallic piece with some casual ones. Casual pieces such as sneakers, jean jackets, or cotton t-shirts are great options for pairing with metallic pieces. Below, I wore this metallic skirt from Queen Styles Boutique and paired it with a striped t-shirt and a pair of really comfortable shoes. Who knew this combination also worked for maternity fashion?

Happy New Year!

With a new year comes new trends on the horizon. Here are a few trends I’m looking forward to exploring this year.
1. Super Stripes. These aren’t just ordinary stripes. They’re a lot bigger and bolder (perfect for the new year). This dress is a bold look, if you want to tone it down, try to wear this trend in a top or a scarf.
2. Unconventional Khaki. Usually when I think about khaki, I associate it with school uniforms (blah). Unconventional khaki isn’t boring. It’s innovative and exciting. This mini dress is perfect for rocking this traditional trend in a new way.
3. Color of the Year: Greenery. Pantone has named the color of the year Greenery. It represents nature and new beginnings. To make this hue more streamlined, try pairing it with a tailored piece.

Holiday Lookbook

I love the holidays. I always have and always will. It’s great to be with family and friends while we celebrate the true reason for the season: the birth of our Savior. The holiday season has a special way of  bringing us together with our loved ones. As exciting as that can be, it can also be frustrating. Different events call for different outfits which can sometimes present challenges in the wardrobe department. I’ve been collecting requests from social media of some looks that you all wanted to see. This was a lot of fun to put together and I look forward to doing many more lookbooks in the future.

Office Holiday Party

For the office party, it depends on the type of environment you work in. This look is for the girl who wants to let her creative flare be seen but maintain her professional stance. To tone down this look, you can always switch out the vest for a black structured blazer.

Date Night/Girls Night Out

Whether you are heading out with the girls or your boo date night can be fun to dress up for. I like opting for a suit rather than a dress to mix up my night look. It’s a little daring (even for me) but I think you need to step outside of your comfort zone every now and then. There’s nothing wrong with showing off your curves or scars that you may have. After all, they’re what make you unique.

Brunch/Shopping Outing

I love the idea of wearing sequins during the day! One of my favorite ways to dress down a pair of sequinned leggings is to pair them with a sweatshirt. I like these leggings because they allow me to give my jeans a rest. If you have to run out to finish off your Christmas shopping list or go to a brunch with your girls, this is the perfect look.

Christmas Day/Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

I can get pretty festive so I love the idea of letting my Christmas spirit show!  I opted for jeans because there’s a good chance I’ll be rolling on the floor with my sister’s dog. If you’re Christmas dinners happen to be more formal, don’t be scared to add a high-waisted skirt with your Christmas sweater.I have no shame in throwing on a Christmas sweater for Christmas dinner or an ugly Christmas sweater party. The holidays are all about having fun. Feel free to dress as festive as you feel!

New Year’s Eve

A sequined dress is perfect for New Year’s Eve. I don’t think it’s cliche’ at all. In fact, I think it’s the perfect way to welcome the new year. These over-the-knee boots serve a dual purpose by making a statement and keeping your legs warm. I love the contrast of gold and silver. Don’t be afraid to have fun with contrast in your wardrobe. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Think about simple colors such as white and black, or red and pink. Have fun with it and don’t forget to add your own personal touch!

Simple Gift Guide

Simple Gift Guide

Christmas shopping can be fun but challenging when you don’t know the size of the woman who is receiving your gift. This gift guide is one that I use year after year because it works and is so simple!
1. You can never have too many scarves. Scarves can make an outfit pop and when the weather is chilly, they’re essential for staying warm.
2. I love a good hat. Whether you’re having a bad hair day or just need to add a little something extra to your look, a hat can help make you look fabulous while simultaneously keeping you warm.
3. It doesn’t matter if your gift receiver is a professional woman or a creative being, everyone needs a watch! It’s a timeless part of a wardrobe (see what I did there 😂).
4. Who doesn’t love a good pair of sunglasses? One of the best factors about sunglasses is your gift receiver can wear them year-round.
5. Last but not least, every woman needs a fierce black bag. One that will not only make a statement but one she can pair with just about anything will do just fine. If your gift receiver already has black, go for another neutral color. Or if your gift receiver is a lover of color, go for a bag that makes a colorful bold statement!
Don’t forget, I’m posting my #holiday #lookbook next Sunday. I’ve already received some requests but you still have time to request any looks you want to see. You can request a look by messing me on #snapchat at DeneaGM, tweeting me on #twitter at DeneaGM, commenting on any #instagram post at lifeisgoldenblog or emailing me at:

Thanksgiving Week

This week I was traveling between Charlotte, Wilmington and Greenville. Thanksgiving week is usually a little hectic for us because we try to split up time between our two families and it’s always worth it. There’s something about being around family that just recharges my batteries. Below are two looks I wore this past week:

This first look was when we were downtown Wilmington, NC. Wilmington is a very laid-back place and I really appreaciate that. I’ve been waiting to wear tights, so when it finally was about forty degrees I pulled these tights out with no hesitation.

This second look was when I went Black Friday Shopping. I haven’t gone Black Friday shopping in years! I’ve forgotten how hectic it can be but I had fun nonetheless.

Happy Halloween!

I worked on Halloween so I celebrated over the weekend by going to a pumpkin patch. I had so much fun! At the pumpkin patch they not only had pumpkins but there was a corn maze, farm animals and apple cider. I’ll be honest, at first it felt awkward being that there were a lot of families there. I went with my sister and husband….and no kids. As I waited for a funnel cake surrounded by kids in costume, I realized that it’s okay to do something childlike every now and then. I think we all can agree that “adulting” can be hard and tiresome at times. When was the last time you did something childlike? Maybe it was playing a board game, building a fort in the living room or visiting a farm?

I encourage you to try to find joy in the little things. Here are a few pictures from this past weekend:

How to: Rock a LBD

I hope your week is off to an awesome start. Over the weekend I went to a friend’s Engamenet Party. I rarely wear black. When I was younger, I thought I had to overcompensate with my personality and what I wore just to stand out. I’ll be honest, I thought there was nothing special about my personality. So I was loud when I should’ve been quiet. I showed aggressiveness when I should’ve shown self-control. I tried to dress a certain way to signify that I was special. Rather than just letting my personality do the work for me. As I’ve gotten older I know without a shadow of a doubt that there’s tons of special things about me. Yes, I’m an introvert by nature but I’m not weak, timid or quiet. Now I know that there’s great strength in having self-control. I know when I need to speak up and when I need to let God vindicate me.

I don’t feel the need to overcompensate with my personality anymore. I know that wearing black doesn’t make me blend in at all. I don’t need to dress a certain way just to show people I’m special. So when I was drawn to this LBD, I realized how much I have changed. So whoever you are, know that you don’t have to act a certain way. You don’t have to dress or look a certain way; just be yourself.
