What Inspires You?

Hello!

I just got back from attending a Bachelorette party in Miami and had an awesome time. I had forgotten how much I miss living in an environment that is so rich with culture. In Miami, the culture is in the food, music, and the way people dress, and talk. I started to realize how inspired I felt and wondered when was the last time I felt that inspired. I really missed having that inspiration. Before I started to go down that negative path of thinking, I started to think about the resources I have now that could inspire me. There are so many times we are waiting for a place or someone to inspire us but we have to realize that instead of waiting, we have the power to inspire ourselves. Don’t get me wrong, I think drawing inspiration from people and places is very important but there are so many other things we can be inspired by. It could be the sunset, sunrise, your loved ones or yourself. Together, lets make a habit of taking control over what inspires us. Feel free to tell me something’s that inspire you in the comments.

Celebrating the Small Stuff

Hello,

I hope you all are doing well. This past weekend I went to a wedding that my husband was in. It’s a great thing when you witness family and friends gathering to celebrate something positive. I had to wonder, how many people (including myself) make it a habit to celebrate the “smaller” events with loved ones? Don’t get me wrong. Of course a wedding is an occasion that should be celebrated but have you celebrated the “smaller” events recently? If you just rocked a test after studying really hard, celebrate. Maybe you’ve been trying to make a habit of remaining positive in the midst of adversity, celebrate that. When you do celebrate, make sure your family and friends are there to bask in your victory. Here’s to all of us celebrating the “small” stuff.

Just Ask

Hello!

I was speaking with someone the other day about taking chances. I was asked why I hadn’t stepped out and taken a chance in a particular area and my response shocked me. I thought about it and responded “I guess I’m afraid that the answer will be no, but I know the answer will always be no if I don’t ask.” I got silent and thought about what I had just said. How many opportunities have I eliminated based off of fear? Before I got too negative about my choices (or lack there of) I decided to look at this from a positive viewpoint: How many opportunities am I going to open myself up to based off of being brave and courageous? To me that sounds a lot better. I can focus on the amount of opportunities I might’ve missed out on, or I can focus on all the possibilities that being brave will open up.

My hope for you (and myself) is to simply start asking. Maybe you’ve been working really hard at work and think it’s time for a raise, well, ask for one. Maybe you need help in a certain situation but have been afraid to ask, well, ask! I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish; the sky is the limit.

Simple and Bold

Hello!

This white dress is one that I’ll be wearing multiple times this summer. I like that it’s simple, understated and bold. It just works. Don’t get me wrong, I love prints and bright colors but every now and then it’s good to be simple and understated. I’ll admit, I used to think I always needed to be loud. Loud in a fashion sense and personality wise. I was always compared to other family members who were a bit more outspoken. I tried to imitate who they were and it just didn’t feel like me.

I’m content with being the strong silent type. That’s who I was created to be. Maybe someone is trying to tell you how you should act, talk or even dress. Well, you were uniquely created. God created you with a unique purpose in mind. You have a destiny to fulfill and you can’t accomplish what you need to by being someone else. Peer pressure is a real thing. Even as an adult. Sure, you could try to fit in but why fit in when you were born to stand out?

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month

Hello!

I was diagnosed with scoliosis in middles school. It was an ordinary day in Physical Education when they did the test. They made you bend down and traced your spine to see if there was an abnormal curvature. When they flagged my test, I honestly didn’t pay it any attention. It was when I went to see a chiropractor that it seemed pretty serious. My curve quickly escalated and he explained that surgery would be needed. Scoliosis can have an impact on some of your organs; specifically, your lungs.  The surgery consisted of placing titanium rods around the upper component of my spine to try to straighten out the curve. After my surgery, they gave me a long list of things I couldn’t do. It felt very pessimistic to be honest. Here I was, in a hospital bed recovering from a condition I had never heard about and they wanted to lecture me on what I couldn’t do for the rest of my life….needless to say I felt confused and sad at the time.

It’s been about twelve years since my surgery. Do I still have pain? Absolutely. Are there times I want to explain my pain to people but won’t because I know they won’t understand? Yes! So I decided to write a list of things you should feel free to do if you have scoliosis. Guilt free. Here it is:

1. Being that I was in high school when I had my surgery, there was no way I could carry all of my books. I remember my mom calling the administrative team and telling them I needed to have a set of books on campus in each of my classes and a set at home. That way I wouldn’t have to carry books around and deal with the pain. Feel free to let people know what you  do. There’s a good chance they won’t get it. They may think you’re faking it but it worth it to not feel the pain at the end of the day while they are sleeping peacefully.

2. I used to be athletic. I loved playing sports and used to dance as well. Scoliosis changed that for me. I still like to be active but I had to get creative. So feel free to think outside of the box to get exercise. Yoga has definitely helped me. I even run now (at my own pace).  Some people will try to force you to work out beyond your limits but you know what’s best. Trust what your body is telling you.

3. I loved wearing heels but the truth is, the higher the heel, the more pain I have. I’m 5’8″.  There were times I felt like I was too tall. I knew I was always going to stand on the back row on picture day. I was tall and lanky. I finally accepted that in high school and then scoliosis happened. I wanted to wear heels and be tall and proud but the pain from heels made that pretty hard. So I had to wear flats, supportive sneakers or kitten heels. The truth is, you should feel free to know what’s best for you. I wear heels now(nothing higher than four inches) but I know that stilettos are out of the question for me. Trust what your body is telling you.

4. There are times when people expect me to carry heavy items. I’ve always been independent so admitting that I can’t carry something is hard for me but I’ve learned you should know there is strength in asking for help. There’s nothing wrong with asking someone to help you.

5. You should LOVE your scar. It took me a while. I didn’t want to wear tank tops or bathing suits because I knew someone would see my ugly scar. The truth is, scars are beautiful. They show what you’re made of so don’t be ashamed of yours. Wear it proudly.

How to: Make Spring Looks Complex

Hello,

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve heard me talk about my belief that the best outfits are complex. Making an outfit complex adds more detail to the eye and in return, is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Making an outfit complex in colder weather is a lot easier to me. In the warmer months, you have to get a little more creative. One way to do this is to belt a scarf as part of your look (this can be seen in my “Own It” post). Another way to make a look more complex is to add a kimono to your look. It’s lightweight so you don’t have to worry about it being to warm. I opted to do this in the look below but I’ll be doing a lot more looks with kimonos!

Florals: Reaping What You Sow

Hello!

I love to wear florals year-round. I love flowers in general. They’re pretty on the surface but a lot of work went into getting them into their current state. Often times I find myself admiring flowers without thinking about the work that went into them. In a garden for example, the gardener had to sow a seed. Chances are, there was a lot of trial and error. It’s a good chance that the weather was uncomfortable and the gardener probably thought about giving up once or twice. However, the gardener knows that what is sown into the plant, is exactly what will be reaped. You can’t reap what you don’t sow. You may not be exactly where you want to be but what are you sowing right now to get you there? Maybe the sowing for you right now means spending less money on clothes and investing in that business you’ve been thinking about. Maybe sowing for you is spending time with your loved ones before you go off to school in the fall. Whatever it is, know that what you are sowing will eventually reap a harvest. As you’re sowing, have that as your vision and use that for motivation when you feel like quitting.

Own it!

Hello!

I don’t really have a classified style. I wouldn’t say that I dress preppy, girly or any other defined style. Let me say that there’s nothing wrong with any of these styles. If you identify with a particular style, own it. I’ve just always believed in dressing for my mood. Fashion, for me, has always been about expression. Well this morning I felt a mixture of excitement and boldness. So mixing prints and colors was a “no brainer” this morning.

Sometimes people ask me why I the outfits I wear don’t match. It’s true. I tend to mix prints and colors in ways that aren’t traditional. It feels natural for me to express myself this way. Over time, I’ve just owned. Whatever your style is, know that it’s yours. Your style is an expression of who you are and how you feel. Own it!

Forgotten Dreams

Hello!

I was speaking with someone the other day about the job market. We were talking about a certain position and I asked my friend if it was a position they were passionate about and she replied “no but I’m not following my passion anymore.” That really made me think “when did we get so cynical?” Before I judged her statement I realized I’ve fallen into the same mindset. I had come to terms with the fact that my dream, in terms of my career, probably isn’t realistic. The way our society is right now can make you think the “American dream” is just that…a dream.

I had to stop and ask myself “when was the last time you reached for your dreams?” Which lead me to another question “when was the last time you got uncomfortable?” I realized I gave up on my dream simply because it made me uncomfortable. That woke me up! Well I’m so glad I serve a God who wants to give me the secret petitions of my heart. Secret meaning even the desires and petitions that I’ve hidden from myself. Well I’ve made up in my mind that it’s time to get uncomfortable. I’m making some changes and pushes myself out of my comfort zone. I challenge you to do the same. Whatever your forgotten dream is, I challenge you to strive for it again.

Spring Lookbook

Hello!

This Spring Lookbook was so fun to create! I created four looks based off of some requests I received. If there’s ever a look you want to see, even if I’m not creating a lookbook, you can always contact me on any of my social media platforms that are at the bottom of this post. I hope you enjoy!

  1. Floral Dress: I received a lot of requests on how to wear a floral dress. Even though I can hear Miranda Priestly saying “Florals, for spring? How groundbreaking.”  To me, this print is NEVER played out and will always be in style year-round. I paired this Victoria Beckham dress with a pair of loafers just to mix up my look. This dress can easily be paired with a pair of heels or open-toed sandals. I like that this isn’t an overall floral printed dress. It’s a great way to introduce yourself to prints without being overwhelmed by them.

2.  Mixed Prints: Speaking of prints…this next look is all about prints! Every time I wear an outfit with mixed prints, I wonder why I don’t do it more often. It’s fun and a great way to personalize your looks. There are many ways to mix prints. If you’re feeling daring but unsure of how to mix prints, try wearing two different prints at opposite ends. For example, wear printed shoes and a printed top or a printed hat with printed pants. The distance between the prints makes them less overwhelming.

3.  Maxi Skirt: Don’t get me wrong, I love a maxi skirt but I wanted to switch up how to style one for spring. So this is actually a maxi skirt! It’s great for when we all have that “I have nothing to wear” moment. Just wear your maxi skirt as a dress and pair it with a belt to define your waist and all of a sudden, you have a new outfit for spring.

4.  Date Night: I love the idea of wearing a romper for date night. It’s a great way to welcome warmer weather. I kept my accessories pretty light for this look. When I’m showing a lot of skin, I like my look to be balanced. This was probably my favorite look. It was very windy out but it was worth it!
